Lisa Sheirer
Lisa Sheirer is a visual artist living and working in Frederick, Maryland. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking from West Virginia University and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Notre Dame. Ms. Sheirer has been creating artwork for over 45 years.
Lisa is an artist in residence at the Y Art Center, where her gallery and studio are located. She is also artist in residence at Foxhaven Farm in southern Frederick County.
Lisa works in a variety of mediums. Pixels, clay, inks, paint, pulp painting, wood, glass, found objects, and cast metals are among the materials she uses. Natural flora, fauna, and mycoflora have been the basis for Lisa’s work over the last 20 years. She has an active social media account showing plant life through the seasons in the Catoctin mountains. Plants are documented using photography and citizen scientific research—Lisa’s art series springs from her observations. Lisa's art, research, and posts aim to educate people about the importance of sustaining our wild places.
Sheirer’s public art projects include a ceramic mural at Baltimore Washington International Airport commissioned by the Maryland Department of Transportation and a glass mural installation in Western MD Health System's lobby. Lisa has participated in many solo and group art exhibitions.
In the fall of 2023, Lisa self-published two artist books (WaterShed and A Book of Ghosts) with the help of a Frederick Arts Council grant. The books are about regional plant and animal life and can be purchased regionally. Lisa looks forward to a September 2024 solo exhibition titled "Sea Legs" at Gaslight Gallery in downtown Frederick.
Artist Statement
Walking in the forests close to my home begins my art making process. I take in the energy from my surroundings. The artwork, (no matter what media used), begins with walking in and observing the landscape, then recording the experience with photos. If photos are included in the final work, they are transformed by vectorizing pixels into lines and shapes representing the living energy of trees, plants, water, and rocks.
Paintings inspired by hikes are made of layers of lines and colors overlapping to create a complex texture. Sometimes wet paint on wet, and other times, allowing the layers to dry first before applying the next layer of paint. I researched all of the flora and fauna used in my work.
Knowing about the nutrients, seasons, transitions, and propagation of each being I’m observing is helpful. I often bring plant matter home to look at it through my digital microscope to see these beings on a different scale - micro to macro. Although there is a scientific side of my exploration, I'm pushing beyond the scene to explore the energy and spirit of forest beings. The ghost, spirit, or life force is represented by lines - rippling, dark and light, death giving way to life.
My work is a plant-based theology — A prayer for people to understand their interconnectedness and the complexity of life in all beings.
